February on Maui. It’s the time
of year when whales are breaching, traffic grinds to a halt in the one-stoplight
town of Paia, and artists island wide open their studios to the public. Today
marks the first weekend of the Maui Open Studios event, featuring artists in
Upcountry Maui.
My friend Jill Painter Christierson has a storefront studio in Makawao. She paints
clothes and canvases and I’ll be helping her with her first open studios event.
Another artist whose work I like, Lynette Pradiga, is hosting her event again
this year.
Jill’s style is breezy and
colorful. Clothing is machine washable and low maintenance.
Lynette’s work is also colorful,
employing vintage advertising art and images. I asked her where she gets all
this material and she said she has collected images for years. Now people have
started sending her old magazines. She has a dresser stuffed with clippings.
Maui Open Studios takes place
from 11 am to 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday for three weekends in February.
Stop by and visit some local
artists.
