June marks the beginning
of Obon season on Maui, when Japanese missions and centers host obon dancing
and festivities throughout the island. Obon celebrations honor those who have
passed but also are gatherings for the community and are enjoyed by the entire
family, regardless of one’s ethnic heritage.
