September 2015 Maui Events At A Glance

Friday, September 4 - Sunday, September 6. Hawaii Food & Wine Festival. These dates are for the Maui portion of the festival which takes place on multiple islands. The festival features celebrity chefs, golf events, wine tastings, cooking demos, excursions and special dinners.  Ka’anapali. 


NEW! Friday, September 4. 5 pm. Opening Blessing & Opening of Malama Wao Akua Juried Art Show. This annual art show highlights the native species of Maui, from mountain to sea. Worth seeing. Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center.

Friday, September 4. 6 pm – 9 pm. Festivals of Aloha, Maui Nui Style Kick Off at Wailuku First Friday.  The annual Festivals of Aloha is celebrated on all the islands, with parades, concerts and cultural activities. The opening event for Maui will be part of the Wailuku Town’s First Friday Party.  


NEW! Friday, September 4. 7 pm – 9 pm. Fundraiser Concert for the African American Monument on Maui.  Maui’s own Nara Boone will sing songs in all keys. Temple of Peace, Haiku. By donation.



NEW! Friday, September 4. 6 pm. PUC NextEra Public Listening Session. Voice your opinion about the proposed merger of NextEra electric with Hawaiian Electric Company. Lihikai Elementary School, Kahului.


Saturday, September 5. 10 am – 4 pm. 2nd Annual Keokea Ho’olaulea. Crafters, music, hula, keiki tent, farmers, and local food. Keokea Marketplace. Free!
                                                 
Saturday, September 5. 6 pm – 9 pm. Richard Ho’opi’i Leo Ki’eki’e Falsetto Competition showcases Maui’s premier amateur male falsetto singers. The male falsetto art form developed when Hawaiian women were forbidden to sang publicly. Part of the Festivals of Aloha for Maui. Grand Wailea Resort, Wailea. 
           
Saturday, September 5. 7:30 pm. Heritage Film Festival: Project Kuleana. The project was founded by three native Hawaiian men who believe that kuleana is what makes music Hawaiian. The evening includes short films, live performances and question and answer session. MACC, Wailuku. $35. 


Sunday, September 6. 10 am. A Tribute to Wayne Dyer. Writer and speaker Wayne Dyer was known internationally and on Maui for his positive, life affirming messages. He passed away recently. Unity Church, Wailuku.

Sunday, September 6. 2:30 – 5:30 pm. First Sunday with Jay and Andrew Molina. Father and son duo will be giving a free concert in the Barefoot Bar of the Hula Grill, Ka’anapali.

Sunday, September 6. 10 am – 2 pm. Summer Block Party for Make-A-Wish Maui. Sidewalk sales, food specials, entertainment and activities. The Outlets of Maui, Lahaina.

Sunday, September 6. 12 noon to 10 pm. Festivals of Aloha, Maui Nui Style – Inaugural Waikapu Country Town Hawaiian Music Festival honoring kupuna (respected elders).


Tuesday, September 8. 6 pm. Italian American Club Potluck with a talk by Jim Jacobson on his visit to Expo Milano 2015. The expo is a global showcase where countries are asked to present the best of their technology while answering a need to provide healthy, safe food for everyone in an environmental way. Free! Bring an Italian dish to share. Kaunoa Senior Center, Sprecklesville.
  
Wednesday, September 9. 6 pm. I’ll See You In My Dreams, a film with the idea that life can begin at any age. AARP Hawaii screens a free film at the MACC followed by a Q & A session about the film. Must pre-register to attend.

Thursday, September 10 – Saturday, September 12. Ku Mai Ka Hula 10th Annual Hula Competition. Award winning halau (hula troupes) compete in group and solo competitions. MACC, Wailuku.

Thursday, September 10 – Sunday, September 13. 5th Annual Maui Jazz & Blues Festival at various locations across Maui.

Friday, September 11. 5:30 – 7:30 pm. Maui Business Brainstormers (MBB) 2nd Annual Networking Event at Hard Rock Café, Lahaina. Complimentary food, beer and wine, 4 hour parking,  FREE! Must join MBB first (free to join), then RSVP.


NEW! Saturday, September 12. 5:30 am – all day. Hana Relay. One of the most popular runs of Maui – teams relay race from Kahului to Hana, often wearing colorful themed costumes. A lot of fun to watch along Hana Highway, even if you don’t participate. Register here. Facebook group here

Tuesday, September 15. 6 pm – 8:30 pm. Brushstrokes & Brews. Learn painting techniques and sip on craft beer with Island Art Party and Maui Brewing Company, Kihei. $39 includes all supplies.

Friday, September 18. 5:30 – 7:30 pm. One Starry Night in Kula – part of the St. John’s Kula Festival. A fun evening event with live and silent auctions, wine tasting, generous appetizers, and entertainment under the stars. $40. St. John’s Episcopal Church, Kula.

Friday, September 18. 7 pm – 9 pm. Festivals of Aloha, Maui Nui Style Aloha Friday Night at Queen Ka’ahumanu Center. Festivities continue on Maui. FREE!

Saturday, September 19. 8 am. Pailolo Challenge. This 26 mile downwind canoe race from D.T. Fleming Beach on Maui to Molokai is considered the “The World’s Funnest Canoe Race.” Participants travel from all over the world to compete. Free to watch. Fleming Beach, West Maui.
                        

Saturday, September 19. 7 am. Maui Walk to End Alzheimer’s. This 3.2 mile walk raises funds for Alzheimer’s support, care and research. Boys and Girls Club – Central Clubhouse, Kahului.  Read more reasons to participate via A Maui Blog.
                                
Saturday, September 19. 10 am – 2 pm. Maui County Kokua Fair. This fair provides information about Maui community resources, including information about nonprofit groups, county services, ways to become involved and volunteer, door prizes, local entertainment and a historical walking tour of Wailuku. FREE!

Saturday, September 19. 9 am – 4 pm. St. John’s Kula Festival. This popular upcountry festival includes entertainment, food, plant sale, craft sale, quilt show, silent auction, and fun for the kids. St. John’s Episcopal Church, Kula. $1 entry.


Saturday, September 19. 9 am – 5 pm. Festivals of Aloha, Maui Nui Style – Ho’olaulea. A day filled with Hawaiian music, hula, crafters and artisans. Historic Banyan Tree Park, Lahaina. FREE! 

Saturday, September 19. 2 pm – 10 pm. American Cancer Society – Hope Fest. This event will help raise funds to build the Hope Lodge Maui, a home away from home for cancer patients and their caregivers.  Features live music, VIP beer tasting, “Fork Cancer” food competition, auction, and other fun. Suggested donation of $25 per person and free for children 13 and under. Maui Brewing Company, Kihei. 

Saturday, September 19. 7 pm – 10 pm. Mental Health Kokua: Arise – A Film and Music Benefit. Enjoy beautiful Hawaiian music, the world premier screening of the film Haleakala: A Trek for Dignity and a silent auction. MACC, Wailuku. $15-30 tickets. 

Sunday, September 20. 5 am shotgun start. 45th Annual JTB Maui Marathon & Half Marathon. This marathon is considered one of the 10 most scenic marathons in the US and goes from Kahului to Ka’anapali. Shorter races this day include the Slappy Cakes 10k, Maui Tacos 5k, Warrior challenge and Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Front Street Mile. Kahului to Ka’anapali. 

Sunday, September 20. 5 pm – 9 pm. Kihei Canoe Club Na Opio World Sprints Fundraiser so paddlers can compete in Australia. Popular band Soul Kitchen Maui will be performing. Nalus South Shore Grill, Kihei. $10.

Thursday, September 24 – Sunday, September 27. 93rd Annual Maui Fair. The premier family and cultural event of September with rides, first-rate entertainment, games, competitions, art and photo exhibits, horticulture and livestock shows, plant sale, chili cook-off, and opening parade. Thursday, September 24. 9:30 am – 2:15 pm. Venturing Out: Exploring the World of Venture Capital. Learn from experts in the venture capital industry on ways to finance your small business. Must preregister. MEDB’s Malcolm Center, Kihei. $20.
 
Friday, September 25 – Saturday, September 26. Chinese Moon Festival celebrates Maui’s agricultural harvest during this traditional Chinese Moon Festival. Chinese tea and moon cakes will be served, erhu performance, fan dance and lantern dance both evenings. Farmers Corner Market, craft activities like calligraphy and lantern making, history talk, and Chinese cuisine for sale. Wo Hing Museum, Lahaina. FREE! 


Friday, September 25, 6 pm -9 pm. Special edition of Kihei’s Fourth Friday Town Party. Entertainment by Maui Rhumba Salsa, Soul Kitchen, Maui Dance Visions and for the first time performing at Kihei 4th Friday HAPA! Azeka Shopping Center, Kihei. FREE! Please bring a donation for the Maui Food Bank. 

ONGOING MAUI EVENTS:

Kiawe Harvest, ongoing, all islands. Join with others on Facebook and participate in kiawe seed pod harvesting. Free. 

2nd Monday of the month, 6:30 pm. Barefoot Essential Theater (BET) and One Night Only – ONO performance: play readings, comedy nights, poetry readings. Iao Theater, Wailuku. FREE. 

Mondays, 12:30 pm – 2 pm. Polynesian Crafting. Learn the traditional art of Polynesian crafting, including coconut weaving. Queen Ka’ahumanu Shopping Center, Kahului. Free!

1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Fridays of the month: Maui Friday parties, held in a different town each week. More info at www.mauifridays.com

WOW - Wailea on Wednesday: On Wednesday nights in September at the Shops of Wailea, learn to play ukulele at “Ukulele Mix Plate,” 6 – 8 pm.

Last Thursday of the month: Hawaiian Music Series. Baldwin Home Museum Lawn, Lahaina. 6 – 7:30 pm.

Labyrinth walks, on or near the full moon each month and on Thursday afternoons at the Sacred Garden of Maui, Makawao.

Hawaii Farmers Union public potluck meetings – held on the 3rd Thursday of the month, usually at the Maui Tropical Plantation and the 4th Tuesday of the month at Haiku Community Center. More info at HFUU Haleakala, closer to the day of the meeeting.
