A Rare Rainbow at Big Beach, Makena

This is not an every day sight. In ten years, this is the only rainbow I've seen at this beach. Makena does get its share of rain, maybe more than other beaches in  South Maui. It even rains here when other beaches a few miles up the road are sunny! It also drizzled while the sun was shining - we call this liquid sunshine. By the way, to see more rainbows, spend some time in upcountry Maui or the North Shore. Here's one of my favorite rainbow posts.

I wish that the rainbow was more vibrant in this photograph. It's a late afternoon rainbow, so the afternoon light is saturated, which kind of makes the rainbow pale by comparison. This is one of those times where real life is so much better than photos. But maybe that's how it should be. The rainbow ends somewhere over the water, so there's a pot of gold in the ocean. If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you in Arizona.
Here's a panorama shot of the rainbow, which looks tiny in comparison to the beach.

The two rainbows below are more common sights. They are near Makena, but up on the mountain towards Ulupalakua.

  1. Lucky you to see such a rare sight. The pictures are awesome! Been raining here all weekend but no rainbows. We get them here and for some reason they are often double rainbows.
