September 14th, 2011, Makawao, Maui - Building continues at the Patrick Dougherty stickwork sculpture at the Hui No’eau. Two artist volunteers climb into a leafy nook, elevated a few feet above ground by some 2 x 4s. Later the boards will be removed, after the upper levels are “leafed out.” There’s a skylight above, through which sunlight streams into the structure.
Other volunteers are flexing and bending large branches before inserting and weaving them into the walls. It’s a bright sunny day, and bouncy music is playing in the background.
